Water damage drywall repair and orange peel texture match

This water damage drywall repair and texture matching project is in the Cloisters subdivision of Indialantic, Fl.

We were contacted by a past customer to do a drywall repair on the already cut out and dried out the water damaged walls in two of the guest bedrooms of their home. Water had got the drywall wet on the one exterior wall in each of the two guest bedrooms of this four bedroom home here in Brevard County.

Once we arrived the drywall had already been cutout up to the window sill around 20″ in one bedroom and at 16″ on the other bedrooms wall. The base board and carpet had been removed by the water restoration company when the plumbing leak had first occurred.

So, all we had to do to get this drywall repair party started, was to prep the floors and cover personal items with plastic. Next, I used the paper masking machine to cover the window sills and bi-fold doors ect… so that nothing would get on them while doing the drywall repair and re texturing of the affected water damaged areas.

  • After resecuring the drywall (with screws) where it had been cutout
  • We installed 1/2″ drywall at all of the cutout areas
  • Applied self adhesive fiberglass mesh tape at all drywall repair seams
  • Next,I applied three coats of 20 minute compound for maximum joint strength
  • Sprayed orange peel texture to match existing texture
  • Lasty, I primed and painted the wall repairs using a 3/4″ roller nap on my roller
Water damage from a plumbing leak

Noitice that the drywall was kept up off of the concrete floor by at 1/2″ kept the drywall from getting wet at all on this wall.

Because of a slight slant of the foundation the water from the leak went straight over to the east wall of the bedrooms and the water wicked up into the bottom section of the drywall. Luckily the leak was caught in time so that only a minimum part of one wall was all that needed to be removed.

Roof leak caused major water damage to this ceiling in Suntree, Fl

With all of the rain we’ve been getting here in Brevard County this Summer, it’s no doubt that there are many homes that have had a roof leak. Which leads to potential water damage on ceilings and walls. What’s worse is if the roof leak continues, all of the moisture can lead to wood rot and is the perfect food source termites in any wood framing, furring strips, roof trusses and roof decking.

Even if you have a block home, wood is most likely part of your roofing system and possibly in your wall framing in order to be able to attach the drywall to a block wall when your home was built.

    Roof Leak?

The best piece of advice I can give you is when looking for a contractor to repair your roof, ceiling or drywall be sure to hire a licensed contractor to get the best results!

    Damage assessment

Damage assessment of ceiling due to roof leak

This blog post is about a water damaged pool patio ceiling caused by a roof leak in the suntree area of Melbourne, Florida.

The ceiling had been repaired previously and by the looks of it, the roof continued to leak until the flat tile roof was completely redone recently by a licensed local roofing contractor.

Once I dug into this exterior ceiling it was apparent that the water damage was more extensive than it looked when the drywall ceiling was in place. I removed most of the ceiling and along with the drywall coming down, so did the blown in insulation…

Not only was a large section drywall ceiling in need of replacement. The furrings strips that hold the ceiling up had termite damage and rusted screws from all of the moisture from the roof leak.

After speaking with the homeowner about what plan of action it was going to take to get the extra framing replaced and resecured.

Once getting the ok to proceed with the extra work:

I removed all of the damaged furring strips and replaced them with new and installed 5/8″ exterior gypsum drywall soffit board with my handy dandy drywall lift with a 16′ extension.

Next, I finished the new drywall seams with fiberglass mesh tape, two coats of 45 minute setting type compound and skim coated the entire ceiling with USG All Purpose joint compound.

The next day I came back and retextured the entire ceiling with a skip trowel texture that needed to match the other four patios with skip troweled ceilings of this exclusive 6,000 sq ft home.

Brevard County Water Damage Drywall Repair

On this Brevard County water damage repair project video, I show you the whole process of doing a water damage drywall repair from start to finish. When
the plumbing leak happened the homeowners cut out the area of drywall that had been damaged by
the water. After they did that they realized that it might be a little bit bigger
project than they really could handle.

In My Youtube video I’ll show you how I do the drywall finishing on this water damage drywall repair from start to finish. There is also a link within in the video of me applying a orange peel texture to this same repair.

    1) The first thing I needed to do was square up the drywall because when they cut it out it was kind of crooked and just passed a couple studs.

    2) Next, I added a couple of one by four furring strips to be able to attach the new drywall too.

    3) I then added two pieces of 1/2″ drywall to the repair areas.

Drywall tip: when doing these types of wall
repairs always add a screw into the existing drywall that was not cut out to
secure it so it will not crack overtime

    4) I added fiberglass mesh drywall tape to all of the seams except the one corner where I like to use paper tape to get a nice crisp defined corner.

Drywall tip: when using fiberglass mesh drywall tape always use a setting type of joint compound this means it comes in a powder form and is much stronger than the all-purpose joint compound that comes in a 5 gallon bucket.

    5) Mix The setting type of joint compound and apply it with a 6 to 12 inch drywall taping knife trying to keep all edges smooth and not raised.

    6) Scrape any high or raised areas on the drywall mud that you just applied using a 6 inch drywall taping knife.

    7) apply the second coat with a 12 inch taping knife depending on how soon you want this to be ready to texture and paint you can use the setting type compound or if you’re not in a hurry just use a all-purpose joint compound.

    8) apply the third coat you really shouldn’t have to put much mud on just a thin layer of all-purpose joint compound.

Drywall tip: I like to use the all-purpose over the setting type compound for the final finish coat because it sends a lot easier than the setting type joint compound.

    9) Using hand sander or sanding sponge Sand down any edges or bumps or humps on your mud work. And touch up any areas that look like they might just need a little bit of mud.

    10) Next, I applied the orange peel texture to the repair walls and feathered it into the existing texture which makes it blend and not stand out like a repair any longer.

    11) Lastly, prime the repaired areas with your favorite type of primer and then paint two coats and you’re done!

Painter tip: I like to use a primer called Zinsser 123 primer in these
types of repairs. Not only is it a great drywall primer, it also has a stain blocker in it
just in case any water stains that might show up from when the plumbing leak originally occurred. That’s my primer recommendation.

Good luck on your water damage drywall repair project!

Barry the cable guy stepped thru my popcorn ceiling!

One of my customers recently got more than cable tv and wireless internet, when Barry the cable guy went to run a couple new cables. Barry accidently stepped on the drywall ceiling from the backside while maneuvering across the trusses up in the attic over the living room hall.
Mr. Jones said he heard a very loud Crunch and Thud. When he went to see what had happened, Barry’s leg was hanging out of the popcorn ceiling! Drywall and insulation was all over the floor. Thankfully Barry was not injured.
This is where I come into the picture. Mr. Jones sent an estimate request through my website which went to my phone. After speaking with Mr. Jones, I went out to have a look and secure the drywall ceiling. Once the cable company ok’d the estimate, I went back and repaired the attic step thru and re-sprayed a popcorn texture blending it into the existing popcorn ceiling.

Interior Painting 8 colors and 1 townhouse in Melbourne,Florida

I just finished up this interior painting project in the Suntree/Viera area of Melbourne.
The townhouse is 2200 sq.ft. We painted the entire place: baseboards, casing, crown, stair trim, spindles, all doors, bifolds, ceilings, walls and three accent walls. It was unoccupied and all of the carpeting will be replaced after the painting is completed.
We used a local paint manufacturers paint called Richards Paint. They’re at the top of my the list when it comes to paint quality in my book.

Drywall paper tape joints cracking and falling down?

Exterior ceiling repair-paper tape cracking and falling down

Exterior ceiling repair-paper tape cracking and falling down

This type of problem is very common on interior and exterior drywall ceilings

    .

Over time the paper drywall tape begins to crack and fall down due to the heat and humidity from our harsh Florida climate.

The extreme weather changes cause the wood framing to expand and contract on a daily basis in turn causing just enough movement of your ceiling to crack and pop the paper tape joints. Especially if the ceiling was nailed or not enough screws were added during the drywall installation process when your home was built. Due to the drywall crew trying to move to fast!

That’s why I always re-secure the drywall joints with screws and check the entire ceiling to make sure it was secured properly during the construction phase. A lot of times the ceiling needs to be completely re-screwed.

The paper tape joints were cracking and starting to fall down on this pool patios drywall ceiling in Viera.

    exterior ceiling repair Viera

    Exterior ceiling repair in Viera

After I removed the tape and while securing the ceiling and joints with screws. I figured out that one section of a drywall seam was sagging in an area where there was no wood framing member to attach the drywall to and had popped the paper tape from movement.

    Paper tape joints removed

    Paper tape joints removed

So I cut out a small 4″x6″ section of the ceiling and added a furring strip to span over both sides of the sagging drywall tape joint. Which I attached to the backside of the ceiling by screwing four screws into the furring strip from the finished side of the ceiling.

    Adding a furring strip

Then, I re-attached the same piece of drywall that I had cut out for a perfect fit.

Next, I installed the self adhesive fiberglass mesh tape and applied three coats of 20 minute Easy Sand quick setting joint compound to the exposed seam and completed the drywall finishing by skim coating the entire ceiling with USG Sheetrock all purpose joint compound (green lid).

This way when I do the skip trowel texture, it will all be one consistent texture. Instead of trying to blend the new texture from a repair into the old texture. Which sometimes can still be noticeable depending on several different factors. Such as painted surfaces absorb differently even after priming.

Pool Patio Ceiling Repair – Tape Joints Coming Down – Merritt Island

This Project Blog is about a exterior pool patio ceiling repair on a home in the Indian Bay sub division Merritt Island, FL.
This type of problem is very common on exterior ceilings. Over time the paper drywall tape begins to fail. The heat and humidity from the Florida climate and the added moisture in the air around a pool cause the tape to crack and start falling down.
Over the years I have perfected the technique and best materials to use on these types of exterior ceilings.
      1) Cover and protect the pool/patio deck.
      2) We removed all of the paper tape from all of the drywall seams.
      3) I like to re secure the drywall at all of the seams, just in case the drywall wasn’t secured properly during the drywall installation phase when the home was built.
      4) Install fiberglass mesh drywall tape to all of the exposed seams (much more exterior friendly than the drywall paper tape).
      5) Apply two coats of a setting type joint compound (hot mud).
      6) Apply final coat with all purpose joint compound or light weight compound
      7) Install a knockdown texture at the repaired areas, feathering into the existing knockdown texture to match.

This Project Blog is about a drywall ceiling repair on a home in the Rio Villa sub division Indialantic, FL.
We were contracted to repair a section of the formal dining room ceiling that had water damage from a roof leak.
First task was to cover and protect the flooring and anything else in the room.

Then we removed and replaced a 4′ x 12′ section of the drywall ceiling that had a skip trowel texture.

After the new drywall was installed, three coats of a setting type joint compound was applied so the drywall finishing and skip trowel texture could be completed in one day.

Next, we Installed a skip trowel texture at the repaired area feathering into the existing skip trowel texture.

Then lastly, spot primed the repair and applied two coats of Richards- Rich Wall Premium Acrylic Paint (flat white-L4 white tint).

How To and Product Review – Strait Flex Uno-Bead

Strait Flex Uno-Bead - Corner bead on a roll

Strait Flex Uno-Bead – Corner bead on a roll

In this product review and demonstration video, I will be using the Strait flex Uno-Bead for the first time ever. This will enable you to see how easy the Strait Flex Uno-Bead is to work with without ever have used it before. Or what might be a bit of a learning curve when it comes to using a product you have never used before. Thanks for watching and if you have any questions about the Strait Flex Uno-Bead please feel free to ask me in the comments section of my video on Youtube.

I’ll be replacing the old corner bead from a closet modification with the Strait Flex composite corner bead on a roll. The closet had already been taken apart by the homeowner that had just purchased this home. The plan was to make a computer/gaming area for their son where the closet was. Since their new to them home was having several remodeling projects going on anyways they wanted to have me take care of this extra job while I was there.

My conclusion after trying Uno-Bead for the first time on this remodeling project is that whether you’re a contractor, handyman or even a home improvement DIY’er. This product will be a fast and easy way to install corner bead on new drywall and drywall repairs. And the Strait Flex Uno-Bead is much stronger the traditional corner beads which means it’s great for drywall corners in high traffic areas.

Another benefit is Uno-Bead requires less joint compound than the traditional metal corner bead or vinyl corner bead. Which speeds up drying time as well. So you can save time, the amount of materials needed to finish outside 90 degree drywall corner. All of this means you make more money while also getting a better and stronger end result. Also since this corner bead product comes on a roll, it’s easily stored eliminating the need to have a special place to store it from getting damaged before getting to the job where you’ll be doing your drywall finishing.

I would definitely use Strait Flex Uno-Bead Again again!

        • Vaulted Ceiling Repair- Knockdown Texture Matching

This Project Blog is about a vaulted ceiling repair on a rental home in Cocoa, FL.
Along with priming and painting the entire interior of this Port Saint John home. We were also contracted to repair the tape joint at the vaulted ceiling that was cracking and falling down.
First, We needed to cover and protect even though the carpeting will be replaced after all of the interior painting and ceiling repairs are completed. Next, Remove and replace the tape joint at vaulted ceiling and apply three coats of a setting type joint compound. Then, Install knockdown texture at repaired area feathering into the existing knockdown texture. Next, Prime the repair and all of the other ceilings and walls with an oil base stain blocking primer due to some smoke damage from the previous renters. Lastly, We applied two coats of Richards- Rich-shield Paint (satin).

          I absolutely recommend Peck Painting.
Paul Peck provided an accurate labor estimate then completed a beautiful and professional 100% interior paint job to my recently purchased home. The job required several sheet rock repairs that are now invisible. His attention to detail is obvious. My home has ceilings up to 30′ with nooks and crannies that look just as good as the easily reachable areas. I absolutely recommend Peck Painting.
