How to skim coat using the paint roller trick

In this Blog video two part series I’ll show you how to do the first coat and second skim coats on a wall to get rid of an ugly poorly done knockdown texture. This how to skim coat trick is a great way for anyone from DIYers to contractors to apply a skim coat to drywall and plaster walls or ceilings.

Skim Coating to get rid of ugly texture

I’ll be using the paint roller method with a 1 1/4″ roller nap (cover) and I thinned down the all purpose joint compound with water.

For skimming I’m using a 14″ drywall taping knife and mud pan to smooth out the mud that was applied.

How to skim coat- Paint roller trick (Part 2)

This How to Skim Coat Trick is a must when skim coating walls and ceilings for DIY’ers!

Once the first skim coat is complete, let the joint compound dry for 24 hours. Day 2- scape any high spots with your 6″ drywall knife and then apply another skim coat to the area. This skim coat will be much easier and smoother than the first skim coat and it will also dry a lot faster too.

Once the second coat is dry:
1) Sand entire wall with 100 grit sandpaper
2) Remove sanding dust from walls by using a half of a bucket of water and a yellow grout sponge rinsing the sponge often in the bucket of water.
3) Prime with a quality latex acrylic primer.
4) Paint on two coats of a quality paint and you’re done!

In Conclusion: I highly recommend this skim coating with the paint roller trick to any contractors or even Do it Yourself’ers for covering up an ugly texture, looking for a smoother finish on their drywall or plaster walls and ceilings, or even after removing wallpaper!

I think this how to skim coat trick saved me several hours of work by not having to take the extra time to try and keep the mud thickness as consistent as possible which means less sanding and mudding.

Tip: If you’re trying to cover up a knockdown or skip trowel texture, be sure to use at least a 1″ to 1 1/4″ roller cover when applying the first skim coat. Then a 3/4″ nap will work fine for the second skim coat of all purpose joint compound to the wall or ceiling or skim coating.

How To and Product Review – Strait Flex Uno-Bead

Strait Flex Uno-Bead - Corner bead on a roll

Strait Flex Uno-Bead – Corner bead on a roll

In this product review and demonstration video, I will be using the Strait flex Uno-Bead for the first time ever. This will enable you to see how easy the Strait Flex Uno-Bead is to work with without ever have used it before. Or what might be a bit of a learning curve when it comes to using a product you have never used before. Thanks for watching and if you have any questions about the Strait Flex Uno-Bead please feel free to ask me in the comments section of my video on Youtube.

I’ll be replacing the old corner bead from a closet modification with the Strait Flex composite corner bead on a roll. The closet had already been taken apart by the homeowner that had just purchased this home. The plan was to make a computer/gaming area for their son where the closet was. Since their new to them home was having several remodeling projects going on anyways they wanted to have me take care of this extra job while I was there.

My conclusion after trying Uno-Bead for the first time on this remodeling project is that whether you’re a contractor, handyman or even a home improvement DIY’er. This product will be a fast and easy way to install corner bead on new drywall and drywall repairs. And the Strait Flex Uno-Bead is much stronger the traditional corner beads which means it’s great for drywall corners in high traffic areas.

Another benefit is Uno-Bead requires less joint compound than the traditional metal corner bead or vinyl corner bead. Which speeds up drying time as well. So you can save time, the amount of materials needed to finish outside 90 degree drywall corner. All of this means you make more money while also getting a better and stronger end result. Also since this corner bead product comes on a roll, it’s easily stored eliminating the need to have a special place to store it from getting damaged before getting to the job where you’ll be doing your drywall finishing.

I would definitely use Strait Flex Uno-Bead Again again!

Here some stats about Strait Flex Uno-Bead 222:

  • This composite corner bead provides outside 90 degree corners for drywall, plaster and EIFS applications and perfectly replaces damaged metal corner bead.
  • Works on all inside and outside corners
  • Drywall, thin coat plaster, EIFS and kitchen remodels, bathroom remodels, home renovations and new construction.
  • High traffic areas where bumps and dents commonly occur.
  • Reduces waste and is easily transported.

  • Installs using all standard methods: Drywall compound, Plaster, EIFS, glue, staples, nails or screws.
  • Available in 2.22″ and 3″ widths.
  • Mold proof, Rust proof and Alkali resistant.
  • Slots insure quick drying time and unmatched bonding strength.
  • PVC/Nylon composite material ensure straight corners every time and prevents mold and rust.

I just wanted to say Happy New Year to all my past, present and future customers and fellow contractors. It’s been a very busy year and I’ve worked with some great people throughout the year.

Looking over my 2014 year in review, It seemed like the economy here in Brevard County was on the upswing with lot’s of activity in the residential real estate and existing homeowner markets. Which included a bounty of renovation, remodel, home improvement and repair contracts throughout 2014.

For that I Am very grateful.

I completed many interior and exterior painting projects, stucco repair, pool deck repair, ceiling repair, drywall repair, texture matching and even soundproofing from Melbourne to Viera, Melbourne Beach, Suntree, Cocoa Beach, Satellite Beach, Indian Harbour Beach, Indialantic, Cape Canaveral, Cocoa and Merritt Island here on the Space Coast.

This type of problem is very common on interior and exterior drywall ceilings. Over time the paper drywall tape begins to crack and fall down due to the heat and humidity from our harsh Florida climate.

Drywall paper tape joints cracking and falling down?

Exterior ceiling repair-paper tape cracking and falling down

Exterior ceiling repair-paper tape cracking and falling down

This type of problem is very common on interior and exterior drywall ceilings

    .

Over time the paper drywall tape begins to crack and fall down due to the heat and humidity from our harsh Florida climate.

The extreme weather changes cause the wood framing to expand and contract on a daily basis in turn causing just enough movement of your ceiling to crack and pop the paper tape joints. Especially if the ceiling was nailed or not enough screws were added during the drywall installation process when your home was built. Due to the drywall crew trying to move to fast!

That’s why I always re-secure the drywall joints with screws and check the entire ceiling to make sure it was secured properly during the construction phase. A lot of times the ceiling needs to be completely re-screwed.

The paper tape joints were cracking and starting to fall down on this pool patios drywall ceiling in Viera.

    exterior ceiling repair Viera

    Exterior ceiling repair in Viera

After I removed the tape and while securing the ceiling and joints with screws. I figured out that one section of a drywall seam was sagging in an area where there was no wood framing member to attach the drywall to and had popped the paper tape from movement.

    Paper tape joints removed

    Paper tape joints removed

So I cut out a small 4″x6″ section of the ceiling and added a furring strip to span over both sides of the sagging drywall tape joint. Which I attached to the backside of the ceiling by screwing four screws into the furring strip from the finished side of the ceiling.

Then, I re-attached the same piece of drywall that I had cut out for a perfect fit.

Next, I installed the self adhesive fiberglass mesh tape and applied three coats of 20 minute Easy Sand quick setting joint compound to the exposed seam and completed the drywall finishing by skim coating the entire ceiling with USG Sheetrock all purpose joint compound (green lid).

This way when I do the skip trowel texture, it will all be one consistent texture. Instead of trying to blend the new texture from a repair into the old texture. Which sometimes can still be noticeable depending on several different factors. Such as painted surfaces absorb differently even after priming.

Roof leak caused major water damage to this ceiling in Suntree, Fl

With all of the rain we’ve been getting here in Brevard County this Summer, it’s no doubt that there are many homes that have had a roof leak. Which leads to potential water damage on ceilings and walls. What’s worse is if the roof leak continues, all of the moisture can lead to wood rot and is the perfect food source termites in any wood framing, furring strips, roof trusses and roof decking.

Even if you have a block home, wood is most likely part of your roofing system and possibly in your wall framing in order to be able to attach the drywall to a block wall when your home was built.

    Roof Leak?

The best piece of advice I can give you is when looking for a contractor to repair your roof, ceiling or drywall be sure to hire a licensed contractor to get the best results!

    Damage assessment

Damage assessment of ceiling due to roof leak

This blog post is about a water damaged pool patio ceiling caused by a roof leak in the suntree area of Melbourne, Florida.

The ceiling had been repaired previously and by the looks of it, the roof continued to leak until the flat tile roof was completely redone recently by a licensed local roofing contractor.

Once I dug into this exterior ceiling it was apparent that the water damage was more extensive than it looked when the drywall ceiling was in place. I removed most of the ceiling and along with the drywall coming down, so did the blown in insulation…

Not only was a large section drywall ceiling in need of replacement. The furrings strips that hold the ceiling up had termite damage and rusted screws from all of the moisture from the roof leak.

Once getting the ok to proceed with the extra work:

I removed all of the damaged furring strips and replaced them with new and installed 5/8″ exterior gypsum drywall soffit board with my handy dandy drywall lift with a 16′ extension.

Cocoa, FL Exterior House Painting Project

On this Cocoa, Florida exterior repaint in Port Saint John we repaired several staircase stucco cracks, damaged stucco from the hurricane shutters and a buckled stucco area at the front entrance of this Cocoa, Fl home.

Water had gotten behind the decorative stucco piece and rusted out the wire lathe at the front entrance of this South facing 10 year old home.

Which ultimately caused the stucco to buckle and fail in that area.

    Chalky paint

    Chalky paint

The whole house had chalky and faded paint that we had to deal with by priming all of the surfaces to be painted first, before we could start the exterior house painting.

Here’s the steps we took to prep and paint the exterior of this Cocoa, Fl home:

    1) After digging out 4″ to 6″ around the perimeter of this homes exterior stucco walls

    2) We pressure washed all of the exterior surfaces to be painted on this stucco home.

    3) Then repaired several buckled stucco areas, stucco that had been damaged from hurricane shutters and staircase stucco cracks.

    4) Next we spot primed the repaired stucco areas with Richards- Rich Flex alkali resistant acrylic masonry primer.

    5) Then we applied Richards- Rich Flex multi-surface conditioner (due to chalkiness and also to assure good adhesion of the finish coat) to the rest of the surfaces of the home to be painted.

    6) Lastly we re-caulked all windows and applied two colors and two coats of Richards- Signature Series 100% acrylic satin house and trim paint to the stucco walls, bands, columns, garage doors and all exterior entry doors. We also spray painted the garage doors for a fresh new factory finish look.

Once all of the painting was completed we backfilled around the perimeter and did one last walk through with home owners to make sure they were completely satisfied.

    Highly Recommended!.

It’s amazing what a little paint can do. Not only does it rejuvenate your homes appearance. Additionally, a properly done paint job whether it’s done by you the homeowner or by a professional painter it will protect your home from the water damage caused from wind driven rain like we had during hurricane season just a few years back. A lot of the water damage caused during these wind events could have been prevented in hundreds of homes here in Brevard county, Fl by simply repairing all of the hairline stucco cracks on the walls of these homes and re caulking all of the exterior windows.

With all of the right preparation and applying the proper sealers and paints to their stucco walls on block and wood frame homes, it most definitely would have prevented the amount of water intrusion damage and insurance claims from the wind driven rain scenario.

    In conclusion:

Spring provides the extra boost of energy that helps us motivate to get things in our lives in order for the rest of the year. This also means taking care of things you care about. How to paint a garage door

Your garage door is a HUGE part of the overall appearance of your home.

Has your homes garage door lost it’s luster?

Garage Door Painting-Before and After-Viera FL

    Is my garage door paintable?

It’s a common question among homeowners that have a weathered, rusted, chalky, faded or dusty garage door that’s in need of a facelift or even just a color change that can give your home a different vibe and better curb appeal .
Whether you’re thinking about just repainting it or looking to paint the entire exterior of your home. I would recommend hiring a professional painting contractor.
But painting a garage door is doable for the advanced DIY’er.

I give this project a difficulty rating of 7 out of 10.

You can get by with just using a brush and roller to paint most garage doors. But with these you will be left with some sort of stippling (a light texture or brush strokes). That’s why I prefer to use an airless sprayer to apply the primers and paint. It it will leave your garage door with a beautiful factory finish like it had when it was brand new.

I’ve painted hundreds of garage doors here in the Brevard County, Fl area. Which means I have been perfecting the most efficient techniques and the tried and true best primers that ensure proper adhesion and the right exterior paints to use on metal and wood garage doors for over 20 years.

Here’s some of the basic bullet points for properly painting your garage door.

Materials and tools needed to prep, prime and paint your garage door:
    • Masking paper- 12″ to 16″
    • 3M paper machine (optional)
    • Masking tape 1.5″ and 3/4″ for paper machine
    • .31 mil light plastic (optional)
    • 5 in 1 tool or putty knife
    • Drop cloths
    • Rags
    • Paintable caulk
    • 1.5 gallons Acrylic Latex Multi surface sealer/primer
    • 2 gallons of a high quality (satin or semi gloss) Acrylic Latex exterior paint
    • Roller frame with a 3/8″ nap and at least a 3′ paint pole
    • 1 Purdy or Wooster 4″ to 6″ brush
    • Or if you can get your hands on a paint sprayer? I use a Graco 695 paint sprayer .311 Spray tip for paint gun

Steps for applying primer/sealer and paint

Step 1) Pressure wash all of the exterior surfaces of the garage door to be painted.

*Tip-Trick- You’re going need to use a good environmentally friendly cleaner or detergent like Simple Green or a similar product. But bleach and water will do as well.

Step 2) Prep the surface and area around the garage door to be painted. Cover anything you don’t want painted.

*Tip-Trick- Raise the garage door halfway up and put masking tape on the bottom rubber seal of the door, Next place drop cloths half in and half out of where the garage door sits on the ground when in the closed position.

Step 3) After the garage door is completely dry, check it for any rusted areas.

Tip-Trick- If you have some rust, take 80 grit sandpaper and sand down any rust spots and and after sanding the surface wipe with a damp cloth.
Purchase a can of rust inhibitor which primes the area and actually turns rust back into metal.

Step 4) I prefer to use my airless paint sprayer to prime the garage door with a – Multi Surface tinted Primer/Sealer (a brush or roller will work as well).

Tip-Trick- After priming and after each coat of paint take your 5 in one tool or putty knife and carefully slide it under one of the three rubber seals on both sides and at the top of the garage door and go around the perimeter of the garage door keeping the tool under the rubber seals. This keeps paint from building up and bonding the three rubber seals to the garage door.

Step 5) After the primer dries, I will then caulk any wood trim joints that are cracking or opened up around the garage door before painting the first coat

Tip-Trick- Try and keep the hole small when cutting the tub of caulk And cut it at a slight angle.
Have a wet sponge or rag handy while caulking to keep your finger clean.

Step 6) Lastly, I spray two coats of a high quality (satin or semi gloss) exterior paint for a long lasting and durable finish.

Tips-Tricks- Spray the first coat going horizontally (side to side) and apply the second coat of paint vertically (up and down). This keeps the the paint from building up in the same areas and also makes for better adhesion of the garage door paint.

    Check this out:
I just finished up an exterior house repaint where we also painted the metal garage door because the paint was chalky and chipping. Most homes exteriors have been painted a few times over the years. But a lot of times the garage door is left out of the painting process. I’m sure you know the ones in your neighborhood…

Here some photo’s and video clips of the garage door painting process:

Here’s a video of the primer/sealer being applied with an airless:
In this video clip you will see my technique on using a paint sprayer to to seal/prime a garage door, vinyl soffits, gutters and stucco. First thing is clean all surfaces to be painted (I used a pressure washer on this project) Next you’ll need to cover everything that you don’t want to get painted with either drop clothes, lightweight plastic or masking paper and tape.

In conclusion. If your garage door happens to sit at the front of your home, then painting it should be at the top of your honey-do list. As you can see that are a lot of steps that go into a painting project like this. I would recommend getting a local professional painting contractor in your area who knows the best paint products suited for your climate. But, if you’re an advanced DIY’er or handyman and you’re up for a challenge. Then have fun with it and Happy Painting!
